Ninety Years of a Mission Unchanged to Help People Solder Better

In 2006 Vitronics Soltec will have continuously been 90 years in business. Vitronics Soltec began in 1916 under the name ZEVA with one simple mission that is still the company’s prime directive today: to help people solder better. In 1916, it meant the development of an electric soldering iron, large and bulky by today’s standards, heavy and unwieldy; but the use of an electric resistive element to heat the soldering iron meant more constant heat, better thermal control, and more time soldering.

The story of Vitronics Soltec is also the story of two companies – the older Soltec, founded in 1916, and Vitronics Corporation, founded in the 1980s. Both became one company with the acquisition of Vitronics by Soltec in 1998; but we’re getting ahead of ourselves here. Early in the 1980s, ZEVA changed its name to Soltec, an abbreviation of Soldering Technology. At the end of 1983 Soltec was acquired by Dover Inc. In the mid-80s Soltec concentrated on the development and manufacturing of automatic soldering machines and automatic board handling systems.
When the need for selective soldering machines became apparent, Vitronics Soltec moved ahead to develop the most sophisticated and capable machines on the market. The company also pioneered total web integration into its machines with mySelective and myReflow units that can be monitored and controlled over the Internet.
The company’s support structure today consists of technical centers and regional offices in many countries. Today the company counts 35 distributors worldwide.
