Fabrinet, the Bangkok/Thailand, based EMS provider specializing in optoelectronic and mechanical modules and subassemblies for industrial and consumer industries, has opened a European office in the vicinity of Frankfurt, Germany. The location, managed by Roland Beckhaus, Manfred Beneken and Siriwan Kaewchansilp, will offer engineering and sales-support functions to the growing European OEM customer base. The company with an annual turnover of more than $200m (2002) and about 2500 employees at its fab with class-100 cleanroom and ISO-9001 certification, was founded by Tom Mitchell (previously with disk-drive specialist Seagate). At the time, Mitchell had discovered Thailand as a low-cost, very productive high-tech manufacturing location rivaling in some aspects, especially in supply-chain infrastructure and worker education, the currently popular mainland China destination. The EMS provider also maintains a U.S. presence in San Francisco.
