EMS provider Schlafhorst Electronics has expanded its test field with a flying-probe tester of type 4040 Hi-line made by SPEA. Due to increased requirements in electronics manufacturing, the flying-probe test (FPT) has become a valuable testing tool, proving indispensable in many fields. This new type of testing combines rapid preparation times (circa 1 to 2 days) with a high fault coverage, allowing economic testing of small and medium-sized series as well as repairs of field returns. Basically, flying-probe testers offer advantages if needle-bed adapters cannot be applied due to economic reasons or because of missing test pads (see figure: IC contacting).
As an advantage, not only high initial costs can be avoided, but the new testing system also allows the rapid implementation of modifications of the test program. This type of testing is ideal not only for the manufacturing of prototypes and small series, but also for board tests of medium-sized batches as well as for tests of backplanes and motherboards. Moreover, the FPT offers advantages regarding maintenance as well as service and repair.
