Automated X-ray inspection capability
The Feinfocus Cougar Pro X-Ray inspection system from Comet is a modular design with an AXI tool that fits seamlessly into any SMT manufacturing process. With a variety of modules, it can be configured as a stand-alone system with automatic analysis, as an off-line automatic handling and analysis system, or as an in-line automated X-ray system. The handling module utilizes a conveyor to load and unload parts to be inspected. Samples are first introduced into the loading station that is fitted onto the side of the device. From there, the conveyor loads the sample into the pre-programmed imaging position, enabling the standard five-axis manipulator to control the sample to be inspected with collision-free protection. Automatic inspection is performed using the dedicated BGA, QFP, Solder Attach, and Barrel Fill operators, or with the Cognex Programmable ADR Module. After initial automated inspection, results can be viewed on the screen or in SPC data format. Upon completion of the inspection, the sample can be inspected manually for further analysis, removed, or automatically reinserted into the production line. The system allows manufacturers to change-over from automated production inspection to manual and semi-automated Failure Analysis inspection modes, including 3D CT X-ray, in minutes.

The system provides enhanced defect recognition of PCB components without sacrificing image quality. Featuring Automated Defect Recognition (ADR) technology, the system greatly reduces analysis time in the production line with fast and accurate recognition of abnormalities. ADR detects process variations before defects are even produced as X-ray sampling can be performed to monitor for process variation, and makes adjustments/corrections to the process and sampling ratios without causing bottlenecks. The company’s patented HDX-Ray 16-bit imaging chain captures real-time high-resolution digital images with film-like quality. True X-Ray Intensity (TXI) control provides immediate and long-term stability of X-ray intensity as well as constant image contrast and brightness.
