Simatic HawkEye 4x is the name of the new series of handheld readers for identifying 1D and 2D codes. These products supplement the previous range of stationary and handheld readers for 1D and 2D codes from Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D). They identify a host of codes reliably in different cell sizes and under different contrast condi- tions.
Simatic HawkEye 40 and HawkEye 45 read codes with medium to high contrast at cell sizes of more than 0.13 millimeters, as well as barcodes with bar sizes of more than 0.12 millimeters. HawkEye 45 also has an integral screen for displaying read-in data and reader settings. HawkEye 40T and HawkEye 45T, the corresponding version with integral screen, are equipped with a high-resolution read head, a powerful processor and the special Siemens direct part mark (DPM) decoding algorithm. This allows high-speed reading of small, low-contrast codes or damaged codes. They also have an extra-large 2MB memory for data acquired offline.
All the new devices are equipped with a right-handed and left-handed pistol grip; the read operation being triggered using a switch on the pistol grip. They are suitable for 1D codes such as barcode, Code 39, Code 93, Code 128, UPC/EAN/JAN, 2of5, RSS/CC-A, BC412, Codabar and Postnet, as well as for 2D codes Data Matrix, PDF417 and QR/MicroQR. The diverse application areas include the identification of drive components in the automobile industry, reading of dot-peen codes on turbine blades in the aerospace industry, reading laser marks on medical equipment and enclosures, and reading laser marks on hard disks in the electronics industry.
The data can be transferred from the reader to the host computer or PC either via cable or wirelessly up to 90 meters using Bluetooth Class 1. In the case of a cable connection, standard USB, RS232 or PS2 interfaces are used. HawkEye 40T and 45T also have a memory send unit. This allows data acquired offline and stored in the 2 MB memory to be transferred on bloc by cable. The integral lithium-ion battery is sufficient for up to 3,000 scans and offers an additional eight hours of standby time. Even after the standby time, data is stored retentively.
