Instrument drivers and test systems

San Diego-based industry consortium IVI is back in the news. Just recently, the IVI Foundation demonstrated its latest achievements: a complete set of specifications for instrument drivers and systems according to the IVI (Interchangeable Virtual Instrumentation) charter. Nine core architectural specifications and eight instrument class specifications had been approved by their technical committee earlier in 2002. The framework for all IVI instrument drivers lets users interchange instrument groups freely. It provides C or COM driver interfaces for a wide range of R&D and production test environments. Instrument class specifications provide common interfaces for a collection of instruments such as power supplies, oscilloscopes, power meters, signal and waveform generators as well as spectrum analyzers and switches, to integrate them into complex test systems. Additionally, IVI shared components were implemented and verified to function as common basic building blocks for all drivers. ”The completion of these specifications gives engineers around the world the freedom to build high-performance test systems more productively,” says IVI president Joe Mueller of Agilent Technologies. ”They give vendors the opportunity to increase customers‘ ease of use by creating higher-quality, consistent drivers.” Agilent announced the adoption of the Com driver for connecting its test and measurement equipment to PC software environments.
