Europe looks east – debut with flying colors

The electronicChina fair in March 2002 organized by the German Messe München International (MMI) in co-operation with Chinese partners at the Shanghai exhibition grounds SNIEC delivered its debut with flying colors. The trade fair attracted around 15,000 visitors which underscores its importance far beyond regional borders. Of the 284 national and international companies exhibiting at the fair, more than 90% of these rated the event with good marks.

This trade fair for components, electronics production and photonic technologies was held in conjunction with PCIM China, a combined exhibition and congress for power electronics and motion systems. It reflects China’s increasing significance as the expected number-one growth market in electronics, and as a strategic location for production capacities. Participants came from all theregions of China and around 10% from overseas and neighboring countries (34% from R&D departments and 23% from the management sector).

The entire exhibition area covered some 11,853sqm in two halls. One was devoted tomanufacturing systems with companies such as Samsung, Siemens Dematic and Assembleon. Hall 2 catered to components. Of the total 284 exhibitors from 17 countries, some 84 companies were Chinese, and 23 enterprises were either joint ventures or WFOE (wholly foreign owned enterprise) organizations. Japan and France were each represented with their own stands, and Germany with a pavilion. Especially the relatively high number of visitors from abroad was seen as positive. Most exhibitors regard this market as holding vast potential and are already planning to take part in the next event.
A highly significant event
Within the scope of the forum accompanying electronicChina, thirty-minute meet-ings were held by European trade associations and exhibitors such as Viscom, Siemens Dematic, Vötsch and the German Engineering Association (VDMA), and Rittal on innovations; or presented information on developments. The German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers‘ Association (ZVEI) organized the forum scene. By way of a special service offer, MMI provided assistance in finding potential Chinese partners, and organized meetings at the fair. Smaller European companies, who used the trade fair as a platform for entering this market, appreciated this offer.
The international interest reflects the significance of this emerging country within the industry. According to China expert Nicholas Lardy of the economic researcher Brookings Institute in Shanghai, China could take over Germany as the world’s third largest trading nation within the next ten years. Based on a ZVEI study, China will become – with a 32% share (total in 2005 of 215bn US dollars) – the largest consumer of electronics by the year 2005. In the future, electronicChina will be an annual event. For the year 2003, it is scheduled from March 11 to 14th.
