The upcoming Omron VT-X700, an automated X-ray inspection (AXI) system, is combining two different types of CT algorithm to deliver image-processing times of just 500ms per projection. Its concept provides high-speed tomosynthesis and 3D-tomography for the inspection of heel fillets and BGA wetability respectively, and is able to deliver resolutions of 7, 10, 15, 20 and 25µm/pixel at angles of 0°, 15°, 30° and 45°. Since the company is talking about a concept machine means that it is actively seeking the views and ideas of potential users, so that requirements can be integrated into the final design ensuring a system that optimally fits the needs of the industry. Although the system is only a concept at this stage, the company says, it should become a reality in the near future. The aim is to design an AXI system that fits perfectly with the coming trends within the electronics manufacturing industry and in particular the automotive sector who’s predicted mid to long-term trends with regard to the development of its electronics systems mean that robust, accurate and reliable inspection techniques look to become increasingly critical.
