Electronics devices, assemblies and equipment are known to be susceptible to static zap. Therefore, great efforts are made to prevent static build-up during manufacture, transport and storage. Where resistance to impact (cushioning) is also required, many choose anti-static foam for the neutralization of static charges, but under certain environmental conditions this material can offer little static protection. This technology uses an additive that diffuses to surfaces where it picks up atmospheric moisture to provide a level of electrical conductivity. However, the maintenance of this conductivity is an equilibrium process depending on ambient humidity, temperature and other conditions. For example, exposure to desert conditions of very low humidity and high temperatures may well result in the surface resistivity exceeding an agreed maximum. To overcome this problem, Zotefoams has introduced a permanently static dissipative, protective foam under the Plastazote brand. This foam incorporates a non-corrosive, encapsulated conductive component in its make-up that provides bulk conduction of static without the need for atmospheric moisture. The foam is expanded using pure nitrogen, ensuring there are no contaminating residues from any blowing agents. It can be thermo-formed and offers excellent chemical resistance, isotropic physical properties along with good cushioning performance, and a surface resistivity that puts it in the static dissipative range.
