Odd-Form Assemblers for Rapid and Flexible Insertion of Leaded Components

Fujitsu Siemens Computers (FSC), the largest and market-leading European manufacturer of IT equipment with headquarters in Augsburg/Germany, has made the decision to equip its production lines with the Speed Mounter 2 from IPTE (Integrated Production and Test Engineering). The Speed Mounter is a powerful odd-form assembler with unsurpassed capabilities.

The highlight of the Speed Mounter is its assembly head featuring highest possible flexibility and speed. It is able to automatically handle and insert virtually any odd-form component. To date, eight machines are already in operation in the manufacturing lines in Augsburg, and the next Speed Mounter will be delivered in the near future. It is possible, the FSC production management explained, that in the course of the upcoming enhancement of production capacity, that even machine number ten would be ordered. In total, the Augsburg fab runs eleven manufacturing lines. FSC designs and manufactures a large range of products for the information technology sector such as professional desktop PCs, notebooks, handheld PCs, servers and other solutions for IT infrastructure.
The volume of this business covering eight machines amounts to about Euro 2.5 million (approximately US$ 3 million). The realization of this huge order was and is combined with an intense partner relationship based on mutual trust. In this partnership, IPTE has developed the basic concept of the Speed Mounter 2 in such a way that the machine is capable of fulfilling all the requirements and specifications FSC have set. The result is an individual and customized adaptation of the odd-form assembler. The lines in Augsburg are organized so that first, the SMDs are placed and the board assembly, reflow soldered, then most of the odd-form components are to be automatically inserted by the Speed Mounter.
“Our technology partnering has been very successful so far,” says Armin Kumpf of Production Engineering Systemboard at Fujitsu Siemens Computers in Augsburg. “For our shop floor we have received highly enabling equipment with the Speed Mounter which has been customized exactly to our requirements”.
