Hands-on machine vision with the MVTec Vision Kit
A presentation case representing the essence of machine vision, the Vision Kit
In its 10th anniversary year, the managers of MVTec Software, Munich, Germany, have come up with something special: a presentation case representing the essence of machine vision, the Vision Kit. Machine vision is a multi purpose technology that is increasingly used worldwide not only in industry but also in medical technology. The system is composed of one or more special cameras, an illumination device, a data transfer unit, and a computer to process and analyze the accordant images, however, the nucleus is software.

The developer of machine vision standard software now breaks new ground. Since the machine vision market definitely has reached maturity, it now is necessary to customize this technology. Thus, beside the technological expertise the company wants to utilize its didactic competence.
It is important to care about handing on special knowledge without giving the audience a headache. For Dr. Wolfgang Eckstein, the managing director, this is a logical step resulting from the know-how that has been acquired over the years: “We are a company that mainly employs developing engineers. We build high technology. If there is something made possible by machine vision, we have contributed to it. A company that works in a segment like this must always think about how to reach customers and to point out what all is possible. However, in the industry didactic concepts concerning this matter are few and far between.”
Eckstein and his team have long agonized over this. As a result, the Vision Kit was developed. Its slogan “Hands-on Machine Vision” describes what this case achieves: The Vision Kit mostly hides complex and complicated technology parts. Thus, this kit enables all of their distribution partners to clearly and directly depict the almost unlimited possibilities of this powerful technology to potential customers.
All live showcased examples have their origin directly from industrial applications. The presented solutions face up exactly the problems that engineers have to cope with day-to-day. Accordingly, the Vision Kit is composed of an aluminum case with exemplary objects from common industrial production, illumination devices, and a camera, which are all quickly assembled. In combination with a notebook, this results in a complete machine vision system: Plug in, play up and marvel over how easy machine vision works. All this is based on their standard software Halcon.
Regarding the customer support, the Vision Kit represents a missing link. Now, the entire support concept can be divided into 4 steps: 1. free application evaluation (including consultancy for a software solution); 2. easy visualization (with the Vision Kit); 3. customer training; 4. easy using (implementation with optimal usability).
