Clear flame retardant resin

Protection for LEDs exposed to hazardous atmospheres
Clear flame retardant resin

Clear flame retardant resin
With popular demand, Electrolube developed the UR5641, an optically clear, flame retardant resin. Source: Electrolube

As the demand for LED encapsulation increases, the electro-chemicals manufacturer, Electrolube, has developed an optically clear, flame retardant resin.

Traditionally, in order to obtain the desired flame retardancy, resin manufacturers have used solid fillers to achieve this but such fillers simply do not permit a transparent resin when cured. Also, liquid flame retardants tend to be halogenated, whereas the UR5641 resin does not contain any fillers and has the additional benefit of being halogen free.

This resin has an aliphatic urethane chemistry base, which is naturally resistant to the yellowing effects of natural light, suitable for exterior and interior applications. It cures to provide a flexible and protective covering over the luminaire elements. The resin also offers high resistance to weather, acids and alkalis, water and mold growth. It is a two-part, semi-rigid, flame retardant polyurethane resin that meets the UL94 V-0 standard. As a durable, low viscosity system, it can be used for a variety of applications. It is suitable for the protection of LEDs exposed to hazardous atmospheres, such as emergency lighting, or for installations in ATEX rated/zoned environments.

With a high dielectric strength of 11 kV/mm and thermal conductivity of 0.35 W/m.K, it provides an operating temperature range of –40 to +120°C. The RoHS-2 compliant resin also provides a cure time within 24 hours at 23°C or 4 hours at 60°C.
