Low thermal resistance, low pressure drop and low cost are main design parameters according to Webra, which has implemented them in a series of new water coolers. For popular IGBT formats special extrusion profiles were developed, for which European press plants have pushed their limits of extrusion aspect ratios. Fluid distribution, connections and sealing are done with connection pieces on the faces that are sealed either with o-rings or with friction stir welds. For partially more complex tasks Webra has developed various cooling channel geometries and plate configurations that fulfill the requirements such as Rth, pressure drop, temperature homogeneity, fluid distribution and inlet/outlet configurations. A high flexibility is achieved through the friction stir weld technology for which Webra is considered a pioneer for the use in water coolers.
