Omrons’s versatile solder inspection system VT-WIN II is capable of operating both in-line and off-line, and provides rapid and accurate identification of a variety of circuit-board assembly defects. A zoom lens allows multiple magnifications down to 10 microns per pixel reportedly giving the system the industry’s highest magnification specifications and flexibility for the optical verification of all types of components down to 0201 s. This flexibility is coupled with a high-speed camera and motion-control assembly resulting in a system that is now twice as fast as its predecessor. Optical character recognition (OCR) features allow distinguishing correct component values, thus preventing incorrect assembled boards. The software operates around a W2k platform and can be programmed via CAD placement data, and allows parameter settings to be defined by the user via a point-and-click method rather than the more complicated numerical values entry. The patented color-highlight system allows 3D information to be obtained from a 2D image by using a series of colored light sources and a single camera to receive the reflected images.
