The next generation of the Mantis family of stereo viewers is incorporating the patented eyepiece-less technology, as well as integrating a latest optical and LED illumination technology. With requirements for smaller boards and lead-free solder, the task for visual inspection is growing ever more. The directive for lead free and restrictions on banned substances leaves the emphasis on inspection to detect any defects. Not just for joint and solder defects, but also – due to the increased temperatures required for alternative solders – the components are at risk of being damaged. This Mantis generation has been designed with just these issues in mind. The stereo viewer bridges the gap between microscope and bench magnifier. Replacing the conventional eyepiece of a microscope, a single viewer presents a large optical field for both eyes. With a traditional microscope the exit pupil is measured at about 3mm, whereas with the Mantis it is increased to about 22mm for the Compact and 25mm for the Elite model. Therefore, as the pupils are not continuously enlarged, there is less chance of eyestrain. The instrument incorporates increased objective magnification of up to X15, providing greater clarity and accuracy to enlarged objects. LED illumination has been integrated into the design, giving shadow-free, true color, bright white light for up to 10,000 hours.
