Unique features have been added to the Feinfocus graphical user interface (FGUI) of its X-ray systems. In version 2.2 a real-time background subtraction has now been implemented, a fast solution to reduce shading in X-ray imagery which commonly limits image contrast. Shading appears as a slight fading of intensity from the image center towards the periphery, the degree of which depends largely on the sample or structure being inspected. The FGUI enables the user to activate an automatic background subtraction process, loading a previously produced background image from one of the many buffers available. The gray values of the background image are automatically subtracted from those of the active image in real-time – visibly optimizing image contrast and, thus, facilitating interpretation of the inspection results. The user-friendly software also includes some more new capabilities, including AVI recorder, 16-bit processing, seamless integration of direct digital detectors, and image saving in a variety of formats such as TIF, BMP and JPG. Many useful processing options have also been added, such as an electronic film operator for advanced real-time X-ray inspection.
