The Phoenix quality-control concept Fixea (fully integrated X-ray evaluation and analysis) reportedly closes the gap between PCB design, non-destructive test and rework. Until now, microfocus X-ray systems were only available as stand-alone gear for manual or semi-automated inspection. With the Fixea platform, image-processing software imports the CAD data of the assembly, supporting fast set-up of inspection programs with individual parameters, templates and routines. The automated inspection cycle starts after loading the sample into the X-ray system by registering the positions of the fiducials. The inspection protocol including fail-pass-decision is being transferred to the rework station. Using a special software, the operator can then review all defects and evaluating them by the aid of a reference image library to perform the required rework. Finally, either the reworked position or the whole board runs through the inspection process again. For full traceability, all boards are registered by barcode scanning before and if necessary after the rework. Thus, it is possible to refer to stored images and inspection protocols any other time. A number of statistical functions are available for interpretation.
