Belgian/Netherlands research center for wireless microsystems and system-in-foil technology

The Belgian R&D institute IMEC and neighboring Dutch TNO have founded The Holst Center in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, a research site for wireless transducer solutions and systems-in-foil. Philips, a player in the field of polymer electronics and microsystems, has committed to becoming the first industrial partner. The Netherlands has committed euro 12.5m to complete the first phase of the cooperation. The Holst will start with two strategic program initiatives. IMEC will expand its research for wireless autonomous microsystems with focus on ultra-low-power radio, ultra-low-power signal processing, micro-power generation, sensor and actuator technology, etc. TNO is an R&D partner in areas such as equipment for the IC industry, optical instrumentation, automotive and materials processing, providing expertise around microsystems and polymer electronics.

In the center, capabilities in printing of polymers, large-area deposition and structuring of thin layers and design of device architectures will be further developed, used to create sensing-and-acting surfaces, large-area, thin-layered products such as organic lighting, sensor tags and organic electronics. Interaction and cooperation with both academia and the industry, including small- and medium-sized enterprises, enables the Holst to tune its scientific approach to the long-term product strategies of its partners. A transfer of technology is assured, and market requirements can be anticipated. Some industrial and university partners have already expressed their intention to participate in this type of R&D-collaboration. Companies, institutes and universities are invited to collaborate globally in the program initiatives. The center is named after Gilles Holst, a Dutch R&D pioneer and first director of Philips Research.
