Palomar Technologies‘ Fast T6 is a 6-axis optical alignment system for test and production applications on optical component, fiber or fiber arrays to a device. The system meets the needs of planar waveguides, AWGs, VOAs, laser diodes, discrete optics, fiber arrays, transmitters, receivers, splitters and modulators. Non-contact, direct-drive motor technology and non-contact feedback, combined with advanced mechanical design, deliver precision motion. The linear axes feature 5 nm resolution, yet deliver long travel such as 25 to 50 mm in the X-axis, up to 6 mm in Y, and up to 75 mm in Z. This eliminates the need for a cumbersome coarse/fine positioner or a manual stage common in many aligners. The pitch, roll and yaw axes feature a programmable virtual pivot-point, 5° of travel, and 0.1-arc sec resolution. The design provides a programmable pivot-point outside the envelope of the motion system. Unlike traditional systems that constrain the center-point of rotation, this rotary mechanism provides unconstrained part access. Complementing the hardware is a wide range of power peaking algorithms, enabling to master complex alignment challenges. Data logging, analysis and graphing tools allow profiling photonic devices. Users also have built-in capability to develop their own proprietary algorithms. The flexibility of the alignment algorithms overcomes many of the commonly faced issues. The modular system allows an efficient migration path as requirements change, including scaleable software that enables programs designed on a component system to be migrated to any machine.
