Concoat has further developed its Synergie range of materials, including coatings, solder resists, masks, flux and wire that work together to include lead-free products. Each process material is tested, measuring the effects of both ionic and non-ionic contamination on the surface insulation resistance (SIR) of assemblies under conditions of accelerated ageing. The aim is to present users a fully researched and developed product range in the move to Pb-free manufacturing. In addition, the company is continuing this program in light of the recently completed EU research project. This work, conducted by NPL, Siemens, NMRC and Lares Cozzi, proved that using test parameters from existing international standards, the SIR value can be over estimated by 10-times, using parameters of typical boards. Consequently, even more tests are necessary for both lead-bearing alloys as well as lead-free materials.
