Semicon Europa 2007: Mobilizing European strengths

This year’s Semicon Europa exposition as well as the conference took place for the first time at the new Trade Fair Centre Stuttgart (“Messe Stuttgart”) from the 9th through the 11th October. The main topic of the show was ‚Mobilizing European strengths‘. More than 800 companies displayed manufacturing technologies for semiconductor devices, photovoltaic cells, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) as well as test, assembly and advanced packaging. Nevertheless, it occurred to some visitors and exhibitors that the exposition seemed to have had below average attendance.

During Semicon Europe Press Conference Stanley T. Myers, President and CEO, SEMI, and Heinz Kundert, President, SEMI Europe provided a briefing on the state of the global semiconductor manufacturing industry, status and outlook for the semiconductor equipment and materials sector as well as highlights about Semicon Europa.
“The European market is forecast to be about $ 3.3 billion this year, which represents 8 % share of the worldwide market,” Myers pointed out. Whereas wafer processing equipment is almost 73 % of the European equipment market. He summed up: “The semiconductor device market is forecast to reach an all time record of $ 252 billion this year, representing a growth of about 3 %. IC unit shipment are at all time highs. However, ASPs are declining and are well below pre-2000 levels. Global equipment and materials market is forecast $ 82 billion. The global 300 mm capacity will double from the start of this year to the end of 2008.”
“Semicon Europa 2007 is focusing on microelectronics manufacturing, photovoltaic and related industries,” Heinz Kundert stated. “We have 278 C fabs and 20 PV manufacturers in Europe. There are many semiconductor manufacturer who diverted partly into photovoltaics.” This is why semiconductor equipment and photovoltaics products were shown at Semicon Europa. Out of the approximately 800 companies exhibiting at Semicon Europa, 150 companies were new to the show, 150 companies showed PV related products, 189 companies presented new products during the show and there were 160 product demonstrations at the booths in the two halls.
The introduction to the show by Myers and Kundert was followed by an open discussion together with Prof. Peter Woditsch, President and CEO, Deutsche Solar, global producer of mono- und multicrystalline silicon wafers for photovoltaics and Hans-Juergen Straub, CEO of X-Fab (Germany), a leading foundry group for mixed-signal semiconductor applications.
Key topics of interest during the three days of the show were:
  • 1. Executive Summit – The event, themed “Enforcing Competitiveness of the European Semiconductor Industry,” featured speakers from all facets of the semiconductor and photovoltaic manufacturing supply chain, who will explore the challenges facing the microelectronics industry in Europe and examine the opportunities to pursue in order to strengthen the regional high-tech industry. Speakers for the Summit included Wolfgang Ziebart, CEO of Infineon Technologies; Peter Woditsch, CEO of Deutsche Solar; Bernd Haeuser, senior vice president of Bosch; André-Jacques Auberton-Hervé, CEO of Soitec; and Papken der Torossian, executive chairman of Vistec.
  • 2. Fab Managers Forum – The SEMI Fab Managers Forum has become a recognized meeting platform for fab managers, executives and professionals from the European semiconductor industry to meet and discuss topics of mutual interest in the essential drive toward total productivity in semiconductor manufacturing.
  • 3. Advanced Packaging Conference – The conference was targeted at advanced packaging experts, as well as their manufacturing and R&D counterparts and the key representatives of packaging and service companies. With two days of sessions focused on first-level packaging, the conference featured presentations by some of the foremost experts in the field.
  • 4. International MEMS/MST Industry Forum – Europe leads the world in innovation in MEMS/MST design and manufacturing. With MEMS/MST growth – particularly in automotive applications, of which Europe generate more than 40 percent of the market – come new challenges and opportunities in design, materials, and manufacturing.
  • 5. 3rd Advanced Photovoltaic Manufacturing Technology Conference – The 3rd Photovoltaic Manufacturing Technology Conference focused on the solutions, equipment, and materials that the industry is able to provide to the wafer, cell and module makers in order to become more competitive in the global energy market. Industry leaders presented their suggestions for improvements both for bulk silicon processes and for the fast developing thin-film production facilities. Different elements of the production process were highlighted: integrated logistics and automation; quality control and monitoring; and energy conservation. New technology breakthroughs were also presented; for instance, the use of MEMS know-how to improve the efficiency of photovoltaic cells or the use of laser micro-jets for cutting and edge isolation.
The conference was split in two segments: bulk-Si manufacturing process, and the strong upcoming thin film manufacturing technologies. Facilities, although applicable for both segments, were covered in the bulk-Si segment.
Semicon Europa also featured numerous business and management programs, including the seminar “Strategies for IP Management,” which focused on the theme ‘equipment suppliers as enablers of technologies; and the seminar, and “Access to Finances,” which was intended to bridge the gap between the industry and the financial community.
