In contactless smart cards and radio-frequency identification (RFID) labels, embedded RF antennas are used to establish a communication link. With DuPont’s polymeric thickfilm (PTF) technology, those antennas can be screen-printed and cured on many different types of films and substrates of smart cards and intelligent labels. The polymeric silver-conductor ink Ag5029 has proven to be easily processable in large-volume productions. It reportedly exhibits superior mechanical and electrical performance in all ISO tests (7810, 7811, etc.). The silver particles allow achieving the low resistivity required in these applications, with values of 4 to12 mOhm/square. Cards and RFID tags can be manufactured with a highly automated reel-to-reel process at substantially lower costs compared to etched-copper practice. PTF technology is claimed to be ideal for applications where cost-efficiency, low weight and mechanical flexibility are required.
