Strong interest by emerging countries around the world in the IEC has increased the number of nations now participating in the work of the International Electrotechnical Commission to 114. At present a program offers these countries a form of participation without the financial burden of membership. The objectives are to encourage greater awareness and use of IEC standards while helping to understand and participate in the work. The two kinds of active participation in the work are membership and associate membership. Membership gives the possibility of fully participating in standardization activities, whereas members are national committees, having equal voting rights. Associate membership allows for limited participation with limited resources, observer status and participation in IEC meetings, but no voting rights.
