Marking and labeling of modules, assemblies, workpieces, components and products is of ever more importance on the production floor for safe recognition and traceability. The procedure has to be integrated into the workflow seamlessly and should not be subject to delays or additional labor. The BAT laser unit of IPTE is writing data codes on spot sizes from 2 x 2mm to up to 70 x 70mm which can be safely read. This is verified by a control read of every code when it has been written on the object. A write period de- pends on the code volume and takes from up to 1 sec. The remains of the write procedures are cleaned away by ionized air and then sucked up. The work cell features a XY-table holding the object under the laser and moving larger pieces accordingly. Depending upon application, CO2 (gas) or YAG (solid state) lasers with different output power ratings will be used. Laser marking offers many advantages: supplying barcodes, serial numbers and others permanently and with high precision and resolution on many different objects. Marking by laser technology complies with environmental concerns and does not need any other treatment. The assembly cells in which the laser unit will be installed are the basic modules for custom-specific line solutions. This allows for a flexibly and universally applied concept. These work cells can be used for board as well as for product assembly. To provide the appropriate system for an application, the modules can be linked serially or in parallel. Despite its high flexibility and its high combinatorial capability, each cell is a self-contained system with integrated SMEMA interface.
