Equipment supplier Datacon – no recession-induced lay-offs

Despite difficult times, Datacon is still supplying its modular flip-chip and MCM die-bonders to leading semiconductor subcontractors. For example, equipment worth over 2m US dollars was now ordered for sites in Taiwan and Korea. The company already received an order for 8 machines from the same user in March. Some of these flip-chip die bonders allow processing of 300mm wafers. Helmut Rutterschmidt, Datacon’s president and director of the board, said, ”This order is just an example of the pleasant business development of Datacon. Starting from a low level in FY2001, the first quarter ended with a record number of incoming orders (+70%); Q2 promised a similar result, and the outlook for Q3 is also favorable. Our long-term business policy – to extend leadership – is now bearing fruit. At Datacon there were no recession-induced lay-offs – instead, we added to our personnel. Since the beginning of the current business year alone, we have taken on a further 60 employees in global sales, support and development. In an area where our competitors laid off qualified personnel as a short-term solution, we can meet the now rising demand with shortest delivery times. This is a competitive advantage which must not be underestimated, and which plays an important role with new customers in particular”. Datacon currently employs 440 staff worldwide. Besides its HQs in in Austria, the group is comprised of Eurotec, Berlin/Germany (special-purpose machines), and Datacon Hungary in Györ (component manufacture, assembly). Two subsidiaries, Datacon North America and Asia Pacific respectively, are handling marketing, sales and technical support in their regions.
