Dear EPP Editor:
Werner Schulz (What Empty Company Parking Lots Tell, EPP Europe 9/10–03) appears to understand the concept of Buy American about as well as Sergeant Schulz on the old T.V. sitcom Hogan’s Heroes. If we give Schulzie a chocolate bar, will he promise to stop America-bashing?
“Buy American” has everything to do with national security and nothing to do with, as he says, “… an ‚old boy‘ connection from the ‚military-industrial complex‘, to say so” (whatever that jingoistic nonsense means). Perhaps, if at least someone in Europe had a viable military worth the powder to blow it to hell, Sgt. Schulz would sing a different tune.
In the meantime, it makes sense for America not to buy sensitive electronics – military electronics – from any nation that has demonstrated hostile intent toward the U.S. on more than one occasion (Red China, euphemistically referred to as the PRC) or to depend on “allies” for strategic supplies, such “allies” as have attempted to stop deliveries of strategic materials to the U.S. when they arbitrarily decide that they don’t like our administration’s politics. As we in the United States are quickly learning, you buy from whom you can trust – that’s turning out to be ourselves – and the British.
