Center for nanoelectronics founded

Together with the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Infineon and AMD will both invest in the newly founded Fraunhofer Center for Nanoelectronic Technology (CNT) in Dresden/Germany, supported by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the state of Saxony. Saxony and the German research ministry have provided funds totaling €80m. The companies are planning to invest €170m in projects over the next five years that will make the region an important European location for advanced research in nanoelectronics. “We are in negotiations with the industrial partners on the details of the cooperation agreement“, stated Fraunhofer president Hans-Jörg Bullinger. By middle of the year, the center should be fully functional. The CNT features cleanroom facilities, and will use infrastructure provided by Infineon. Center head Peter Kücher has built up Infineon’s flash business, and as director of the joint venture Semiconductor 300 he developed 300mm manufacturing technology. With Infineon’s and AMD’s 300mm production already in place, Dresden is regarded an excellent location for nanoelectronic research, open to partnership with materials and device manufacturers as well as institutes. “The CNT has the potential of becoming a truly European research center – rather like Leti in France and Imec in Belgium – and joining with these to promote cooperation in nanoelectronics,” underlined Prof. Bullinger.
