Joachim Ensslin: Electronica is the number-one communications platform for the industry
The Electronica takes place at the Munich trade fair center from November 12 to 15, and it’s the20th International Trade Fair for Components and Assemblies. About 2,846 national and international exhibitors have opted for attendance. Despite the catastrophic business situation, the organizers are reckoning with 85,000 visitors.

The trade show is divided into 17 segments, each regarded from the organizer as a community on its own, addressing exactly the requirements of their respective target groups. Electromechanical components have been split into interconnection technology, cables and switches (also including relays). Further newly established segments are electronic design, test and measurement, housing technology, servos and drive elements. Semiconductors, followed by passives and connectors, of course, occupy the largest area. Some sectors now occupy even more space than before, for example PCBs (+19%), passive components (+19%) and displays (+25%).

For the requirements of special groups
With the sectors automotive innovation, embedded systems and MEMS as enabling technologies, the event tries to cover the promising market niches in this area of electronic activities. In the automotive area, the main emphasis is on telematics, bus systems, safety, accident prevention and the electrical system. In addition, the 3rd International Congress for the 42V net will take place on the show ground. Two years ago, the organizers set up a sector for embedded systems. Now, it’s been systematically expanded with plenty of exhibitors from this business field, and an arena for product presentations and discussions has also been integrated, so the entire hall is precisely matched to this specific target group. The Embedded Systems Congress will also take place during the show. From the organizer’s view, this realization is considered as ”a long-term strategic goal”, concerning the implementation of embedded electronics in an abundance of applications.
A traditional highlight at Electronica has always been the forum discussion on the first day. Top-level executives of the international electronics industry will discuss: Semiconductor Industry – who are the future creators of demand? This year, for the first time, all visitors will haveto register, the data to be stored on a personalized badge. They can be quickly scanned on every booth, to ease handling of the details. Electronica will be a business barometer, and probably a place where the industry hopefully gains momentum again. Reportedly, attendance has remained stable, despite the tough economical situation. As Joachim Ensslin, the current managing director who will retire soon, explained, ”Electronica is the number-one com-munications platform for the industry – it develops with it, and it takes up technological trends and integrates them”.
